trop•ic (ˈträ-pik) n. The turning-point; a solstitial point. Hunter Roberge's mother disowned her and kicked her out of the house at the age of eighteen. Betrayed and emotionally devastated, Hunter escaped Otter Falls, Vermont, on a bus and started life anew on the west coast. Sixteen years later, her mother dies and inexplicably leaves her estate to Hunter rather than her sons. Hunter's two brothers are confused and angered by the bequeathing and Hunter is forced to deal with unresolved family dynamics. Amidst this turmoil, a chance meeting with a childhood acquaintance results in unexpected romance. Hunter soon discovers that her mother's disposition of her estate is not the only mystery. A series of events reveals long-buried secrets that bring her to a point of questioning what she believes to be true, and this becomes the tropic of Hunter.

The good news of this well-paced novel with a mystery subplot: Dysfunctional family does not have to be a life sentence. Any female raised by a cold, vain narcissist mother (or father) will relate to the corrosive family secrets that steadily peel away, even more if they are lesbian.Wrapped up in a fully developed cast of characters and snappy "rings true" dialogue are some hard truths about family and those that pretend to be family. Self-involved women who become mothers almost always sideline their husbands, produce entitled, volatile trophy sons and try to crush the spirit of their daughter(s), with whom they feel in constant competition and whom they simply are unable to love - or even like. Religion is their enabler and weapon, as if they needed one to destroy a vulnerable female child. Straight daughters survive those power tripping mothers by playing the game - marrying and producing children/grandchildren, more often than not keeping the dysfunction wheel spinning. It is the child free and/or lesbian daughters who early on in childhood end up with a target on their back, with mothers who use and reward mini-me sons as their physical and psychological enforcers to violently hurt and emotionally crush the daughter. It's profoundly common for those malformed parents to use inheritances to continue to pummel their exiled offspring from the grave. Everything they touch is damaged, though to the outsider those parents lacking all self-awareness and conscience are often the picture of stalwart righteousness and even grace. But looks can be deceiving. Therein lies a great, multifaceted story.
It is unacceptable how often this is the case in so many families, regardless of race, class, region. Some daughters do stage a coup and survive - they escape, figure it out and form strong, loving relationships in spite of those sad childhoods to which they were held hostage.

The Tropic of Hunter Cheyne Curry 9781935627685 Books Reviews
Cheyne Curry's books are always well worth reading. This story involves bad feelings within a family, plus small town attitudes. Love, tension, mystery, twists, and some laughs make this a must.
Great story. Mystery, love and a dysfunctional family make for great reading. I would recommend this book to my friends.
I have actually read this story before on a Lesbian Fiction site, and purchased it on . I loved it then, and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I really enjoyed the main characters, as well as the brothers story lines. There is a very interesting twist in this story that will make the reader say "Oh Shit!" Both of the women in this story are strong and endearing. I would definitely recommend this story to anyone who likes a love story, with a good twist!
This was a great book. It was a great coming home and finding love story but it also had twists that were interesting. Well worth a read!
Great book. Easy read. You really feel the hatred for Hunter that her mother felt. Very painful to read. But I admit, I did not see the twist in the story coming at me. Great ending.
I selected this book because it is one of the nine finalists for the 2014 Golden Crown Literary Society's Ann Bannon Popular Choice Award...and if GCLS had a romantic comedy category, TofH should be nominated for that award too. This book has some of the wittiest repartee I've read this year ... and I read several books a week... I'm still chuckling. If you like discerning dialogue, laugh-out-loud humor and sizzling sex woven through an entertaining story of dysfunctional family and mystery, then I recommend this book.
I first read this story on a lesbian fiction site and fell in love with Cheyne’s work. She has enhanced the original story giving the characters more depth and complexity. I concur with Velvet Lounger and Lisa Tu’s reviews and don’t think I can add to theirs. This is a good story, a mystery with twists, and some romance. My only complaint was that the book could have used a proofreader for the typos and dropped words. Format app on my ipad.
